The name Adare is derived from Áth Dara, meaning "the ford of the oak", and was historically a crossing point on the River Maigue. Today, Adare is renowned as Ireland's prettiest village and holds official Heritage Town designation from the Irish Government.
Adare is a regular stop on tours of the south-west, and the Heritage Centre in the middle of the village covers its history alongside craft shops and a restaurant. The village is known for its medieval abbeys and its thatched cottages.
